Position Summary:

Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) is the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s initiative to establish youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles. The Manager of Youth Orchestra LA will be responsible for implementing youth orchestra plans in collaboration with program partners, developing and supporting the YOLA stakeholder network, and connecting YOLA to other education and community programs of the Philharmonic. It is also the YOLA Manager’s responsibility to guide appropriate evaluation, assessment, and documentation of the program, and to help in the development and tracking of project budgets.

Position Elements:

  • Managing the successful implementation of the LA Philharmonic’s responsibility for EXPO Center Youth Orchestra and subsequent YOLA orchestra programs
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with YOLA program partners and stakeholders
  • Collaborating effectively with YOLA program partners on pedagogy and curriculum at each YOLA site
  • Planning and implementing YOLA site-related teaching artists and parent professional development in coordination with program partners and existing LAPA professional development efforts
  • Researching and identifying communities and partners for future YOLA development
  • Implementing YOLA stakeholder network development and communication for sustained quality execution
  • Managing evaluation, assessment, and documentation of YOLA initiative and individual youth orchestras and providing timely updates, reports and recommendations for improvement
  • Collaborating on the development and overseeing YOLA program budgets, as well as providing regular budget/financial analysis and appropriate reporting
  • Developing productive connections between YOLA and other education and community programs of the LA Phil

Position Requirements:

  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in an arts organization working in the field of arts education with a 4-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required
  • Familiarity with different music education pedagogies and the culture of youth orchestras and/or community music schools in combination with demonstrable experience working with music teachers and students
  • Experience in collaborative program design and development coupled with a successful track record of sustainable implementation and execution of large-scale projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrable ability to effectively facilitate meetings and present publicly and provide professional and appropriate business level written information utilizing various media
  • Strong orchestral music knowledge
  • Strong desktop computer skills (business professional level) and excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and populations and work cooperatively in a small open workplace environment
  • Knowledge of state or national learning standards a plus
  • Spanish proficiency preferred
