In his first WDCH appearance as a violinist, Gustavo Dudamel will perform with musicians of the LA Phil in a Chamber Music Society concert featuring the Mozart String Quintet in C Major. Also in late March, the LA Phil’s music director-designate will lead the full orchestra in three performances of a program that opens with Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Insomnia and concludes with Berlioz’ towering Symphonie fantastique. Dudamel is currently touring in Spain with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. In February, he will lead the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, of which he is principal conductor, in four concerts in Sweden before traveling to Berlin, where he will conduct five performances of La bohème at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

Esa-Pekka Salonen and LA Phil Up for Grammy

The 2008 Annual Grammy nominations were announced on December 6th and include recognition of Esa-Pekka Salonen and the L.A. Philharmonic in the Best Orchestral Performance category for their recording of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. The Deutsche Grammophon CD, recorded live at Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2006, includes Mussorgsky’s Night on Bare Mountain and Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin Suite. The download version of the newly nominated recording, available on iTunes, contains a bonus interview with Esa-Pekka Salonen detailing the challenges of the program and its successful realization in Walt Disney Concert Hall. The 50th Grammy Awards show will air on February 10 on CBS.

Updated LA Phil Website for 2008 Debuts

Stage One of the re-design of the Philharmonic’s website was unveiled to wide acclaim in late November. The streamlined site features beautifully updated graphics; an enhanced performance calendar with a filtering option to narrow program searches; more organizational content, including a staff recommendations page; and greatly enhanced seating charts. Plans for Stage Two of the project, currently in progress, include a recommendation engine to help direct ticket browsers and buyers to performances and series of likely interest to them; more photo galleries and audio-visual clips; and a virtual tour of Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
