Vienna, At Long Last

Vienna, At Long Last

Ah, Vienna!

A poster in Vienna announces the final concerts of the LA Phil's 2011 European Tour.

It's still cold, especially for us Angelenos, but the sun is out and should be for these last days of the tour. Last night was a special one - playing Mahler 9th in the hall where Mahler conducted - the Musikverein, one of the best, if not the best, in the world.

Playing in this hall, in this city of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler and many more, especially following the announcement of Gustavo's extending his commitment to us and us to him through 2019, had even more meaning for me, since I had to miss the 1981 tour with Giulini. That was the last time the Philharmonic performed in the Musikverein, during my first years with the orchestra.

After the concert, over a dinner of Wiener schnitzel, potato salad and beer at a 105-year-old restaurant, I renewed my acquaintance with a bass player and met a clarinetist, both from L.A., both living and playing here for the last 30+ years.
