On Tour with the Orchestra: A Note from Northern California

Members of the LA Phil Board of Directors, musicians and friends at Darioush Winery.

The San Francisco part of the tour was great! Some 14 board members and their spouses traveled up the coast to enjoy the perfect weather and serve as the most enthusiastic fan club for our beloved LA Phil. We were all so proud of the audiences' incredible responses to our exciting programs, which involved such great new music alongside Tchaikovsky and Brahms. Yuja Wang was also amazing. Both concerts were sold out and received standing ovations.

We also took part in some fabulous social activities. Diane Disney Miller's family treated us to a great tour and lunch at their Silverado Vineyards in the Napa Valley. Another day, the board members enjoyed a tour of two private art collections and lunch on the waterfront at the Ferry Building.

Board member Darioush Khaledi and his wife hosted a special day at their Napa winery for some of the board members, staff and orchestra members. We had a great demonstration of Persian instruments of ancient derivation, many of which are the ancestors of the instruments our orchestra plays today. Martin Chalifour and some of the other musicians actually played a couple of the them! Then we were all treated to a beautiful lunch and wine tasting. As you can tell from the following photos, a wonderful time was had by all!

There's nothing quite like an al fresco California table setting.

Violinist Martin Chalifour tries his hand(s) at an ancient Persian version of his instrument.

Darioush Khaledi, our gracious host.
