Connecting young musicians across Los Angeles County with world-class musicians, conductors, and composers

A major initiative to cultivate the next generation of musicians

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has completed an extensive planning process for education, resulting in a newly defined strategic direction and major institutional educational initiatives. Chief among these is the Young Musicians Initiative, comprised of a number of innovative music education programs that address the specific artistic needs of young musicians in L.A. County. These young musicians represent an extraordinary variety of different artistic proficiencies and personify the ethnic and economic diversity of Los Angeles.

While Philharmonic educational programs have provided elementary school children with access to the orchestra, the organization has had few programs for young people who self-selected music as a course of study. The Young Musicians Initiative represents a major commitment by the L.A. Philharmonic to invest in the artistic needs of those students by providing them with access to its musicians, artistic resources, and concert venues.

The power of this initiative is that it is integrated with the overall direction and objectives of the institution, reflecting its core values and continuing its tradition to nurture the work of emerging and established musicians. The programs in this initiative are uniquely designed to address the artistic needs of today’s young instrumentalists and composers. In order to implement these programs, the Philharmonic collaborates with a range of other institutions such as public schools, independent youth orchestras, and music education providers, with the goal of complementing existing music resources.

The following programs comprise the Young Musicians Initiative:

Youth Orchestra LA
Youth Orchestra Partners Program
School Partners Program
Composer Fellowship Program
