Youth Orchestra Los Angeles
Through Gustavo Dudamel's Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) program - inspired by Venezuela's revolutionary El Sistema - the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change.
Did you see YOLA at the Super Bowl?
YOLA is possible because of fantastic partnerships.
The students who played at the Super Bowl attend YOLA @ EXPO, a partnership of the LA Phil, Harmony Project, and the EXPO Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility.
YOLA @ EXPO is one of three orchestra sites serving students across Los Angeles. YOLA also includes YOLA @ HOLA, a partnership of the LA Phil and Heart of Los Angeles, and YOLA @ LACHSA, a partnership of the LA Phil and Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.
"It has been a dream to see YOLA grow and to watch how these students have changed on an artistic level, and also as citizens."
- Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director, Los Angeles Philharmonic
Located in South Los Angeles and founded with the Harmony Project in 2007 as the first YOLA site. YOLA at EXPO Center engages over 325 students ages 6-18.
YOLA at HOLA is located in the Rampart District, one of L.A.'s most densely populated and diverse neighborhoods. Founded in 2010, the program engages over 250 students ages 6-16.
Located east of downtown L.A., YOLA at LACHSA engages 140 students ages 8-12. High school students at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts act as mentors to their younger YOLA counterparts.
YOLA NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT
With the YOLA sites at its core, the YOLA Neighborhood Project brings music into the lives over 15,000 community members by creating concentrated networks of musical activity in South Los Angeles, the Rampart District, and East Los Angeles. Thousands of school children experience music through in-class residencies, field-trips to Walt Disney Concert Hall and free concerts performed by LA Phil musicians.
