Over 200 music and social advocate activists from around the globe come together in Los Angeles. This year’s symposium discussed issues relevant to El Sistema-inspired programs and to the National Take a Stand Festival. Attendees discussed repertoire selection, goals for social growth, and support for students as they age through programs. At the culmination of the symposium, an orchestra of teaching artists, members of Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, and musicians from the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela performed on stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Take a Stand – a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Bard College, and the Longy School of Music of Bard College – is an innovative initiative that supports social change through music. Inspired by El Sistema, Venezuela’s revolutionary music education program, Take a Stand supports the field through national conferences and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Music degree program.
