Mozart/da Ponte Trilogy
Three of the greatest operas ever written were collaborations between librettist Lorenzo da Ponte and composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, and Così fan tutte. Over the next three years, the LA Phil will present the trilogy, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Frank Gehry designed last season’s Don Giovanni, followed by other iconic architects in subsequent seasons.

The Marriage of Figaro
May 17, 19, 23, 24, 2013
It was Mozart who brought Beaumarchais’ subversive French comedy (set in Seville!) to Lorenzo Da Ponte for their first collaboration. Da Ponte turned the play into a libretto in six weeks, rewriting it in poetic Italian and removing all of the original’s political references. It became one of Mozart’s greatest successes and endures as a model of what a comic opera can be, LOL funny and also profoundly wise and moving.
