About the performer

Alexei Tanovitski

Bass ALEXEI TANOVITSKI (Varlaam) was a prizewinner at the International Rimsky-Korsakov Young Opera Singers' Competition (St. Petersburg, 2003), the International Elena Obraztsova Competition (1999, 2005), the Third International Singers' Competition in China (Ningbo, 2005), and the Fourth International Singers' Competition in Japan (Shizuoka, 2005). Born in Minsk, he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. He has been a soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers since 1999.

Tanovitski's repertoire includes Farlaf (Ruslan and Lyudmila), Commander (The Stone Guest in concert), Boris Godunov and Varlaam (Boris Godunov), Ivan Khovansky (Khovanshchina), Prince Galitsky (Prince Igor), Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Kichiga and Mamyrov (The Enchantress), René (Iolanta), Viking Merchant (Sadko), Bermyata (The Snow Maiden), Malyuta Skuratov (The Tsar's Bride), Tsar Saltan (The Tale of Tsar Saltan), Burundai (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia), Tsar Dodon (The Golden Cockerel), Inquisitor (The Fiery Angel), King of Clubs (The Love for Three Oranges), Remenyuk (Semyon Kotko), General Yermolov (War and Peace), Ivan Yakovlevich (The Nose), Boris Timofeyevich (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Don Prudenzio (Il viaggio a Reims), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Banco (Macbeth), Filippo II and Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlo), Padre Guardiano (La forza del destino), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Colline (La bohème), Giacomo Balducci (Benvenuto Cellini in concert), Abimélech (Samson et Dalila), Wotan (Das Rheingold), Hagen (Götterdämmerung), Hunding (Die Walküre), Titurel (Parsifal), Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Shostakovich's Fourteenth Symphony.

Tanovitski has toured with the Mariinsky Opera Company to Italy (La Scala), the UK (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), France (Théâtre du Châtelet, Opéra Bastille), Spain (Teatro Real), Portugal (Teatro San Carlos), Finland (Turku, Mikkeli Festival), Japan (Suntory Hall, Bunka Kaikan), Germany (Baden-Baden Festival), Austria (Salzburg Festival), the Netherlands (Diaghilev Festival), the U.S. (Metropolitan Opera), Korea, and China. He also has performed at the Moscow Easter Festival.

Tanovitski has participated in international productions, performing as Banco (Verdi's Macbeth) at the Budapest National Opera (2002, 2004), Le Cardinal de Brogni (Halévy's La Juive), also at the Budapest National Opera (2004), and the King (Prokofiev's Love for Three Oranges) at the Luxemburg National Opera (2005), and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival (France, 2005).
