Clarinetist DAVID HOWARD joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the start of the 1981/82 season, under Music Director Carlo Maria Giulini. Previously, Howard was principal clarinetist with the New Jersey Symphony and the New Haven Symphony. He performs frequently with the Philharmonic Chamber Music Society and the Philharmonic New Music Group.
A Los Angeles native, he graduated magna cum laude from Yale University, earning a B.A. in Russian literature. In collaboration with former Philharmonic pianist Zita Carno, Howard has recorded a compact disc of 20th-century works for clarinet and piano, including music of Bernstein, Hindemith, and Lutoslawski, for the Centaur label. In two 1997 concerts with the Philharmonic New Music Group, in New York and in Los Angeles, he was the bass clarinet soloist in Iannis Xenakis' Échange, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. In March of 2001, Howard performed as clarinet soloist in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with the Philharmonic. In January 2002 he was a soloist with the Philharmonic New Music Group in John Harbison's Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet, and Strings, with the composer conducting.
Since 1986, Howard has served on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. In the summer of 2001, he performed and served on the faculty at the Aspen Music Festival. Last December he performed and gave master classes at the Clarinet Days Festival in Tel Aviv. This year he will be performing and giving master classes at international festivals in Vancouver and Beijing, at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and at Stockholm's Royal Academy.
