DAN BUBECK (Narrator) made his professional debut in the premiere of John Adams’ El Niño at the Théâtre Musical de Paris-Châtelet in a production by Peter Sellars conducted by Kent Nagano. Since then he has performed in El Niño in more than 20 productions on four continents, including performances with the BBC Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester-Berlin, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Radio Filharmonisch Holland, Estonian National Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Ravinia Festival, and the Adelaide Festival. In 2012 he sang Countertenor 1 for the premiere of John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel. He has performed under such renowned conductors as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Robert Spano, David Robertson, and Tõnu Kaljuste.
A Handel specialist, he has sung numerous operatic and oratorio roles including the title roles of Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo, and Solomon, as well as roles in Saul, Flavio, Partenope, Arianna in Creta, Theodora, Israel in Egypt, and Messiah for New York City Opera, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Carmel Bach Festival, St. Thomas Church, Opera Vivente, and Gotham Chamber Opera.
Among many career highlights, he has sung Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Princeton Festival, Handel arias with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, excerpts of Philip Glass’ Akhnaten with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by John Adams, Henze’s Das verratene Meer with the Tokyo Symphony, the American premiere of Lost Objects with Concerto Köln (with music by David Lang, Julia Wolfe, and Michael Gordon), a recital tour in China with the Suzaka Trio, Messiah and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the American Bach Soloists, and New York City Opera’s VOX new music project.
Daniel Bubeck can be heard on recordings of John Adams’ El Niño with Kent Nagano, The New Four Seasons with Musica Sequenza, and the soundtrack of the Warner Brothers thriller I Am Legend. Forthcoming engagements include El Niño with the London Philharmonic, the role of Fernando in Handel’s Rodrigo with Opera Mission, and performances of Adams’ Gospel According to the Other Mary at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Ravinia Festival.
