FRANS WILLEM DE HAAS studied drama at the University of Amsterdam and Musiktheatre at the Maximilian University of Munich and works since 1996 mainly as an assistant director and director in opera.
From 2001 till 2009 he was full employed at the Flemish Opera in Antwerp, Belgium. Since 2010 he started to work as a freelancer and was engaged by some of the leading opera companies of Europe, like Opera National the Paris (Tannhäuser and Zauberflöte), Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Theatre de L’Opera la Ville de Nice (Orlando Furioso), Opera National du rhin in Strasbourg (Richard III and La Bohème) and Opera de Lyon ( Macbeth) in France. Theatre La Monnaie in Brussels (Idomeneo, Orlando, Clemenza di Tito) and De Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp (Entführung aus dem serail, Chovanchina) in Belgium. Den Norske Opera and Ballet in Oslo (Fanciulla del West), Deutsche Opera am Rhein in Düsseldorf (Richard III and La Bohème) and Staatsoper Berlin (Dyonisos) in Germany. Grand Theatre del Liceu in Barcelona in Spain (Tannhäuser), Royal Danish Theatre in Kopenhagen (Cosi fan Tutti), Grand Theatre Genève (Richard III)in Switserland, Wiener Staatsoper (Rigoletto) in Austria and De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam (o.a. Ercolé Amante, Faust, Quillaume Tell, Parsifal, Gurrelieder, Meistersinger Trovatore).
Frans Willem de Haas worked with different opera directors over the years, with many he develloped a long time working relationship. Directors he works with are David Alden, Christof Loy, Guy Joosten, the stage director Ivo van Hove, the Spanish company Fura del Baus, and Robert Carsen. With Robert Carsen he works for over almost 20 years together. He invited mister de Haas, to work in the next season on a new production of the Rosenkavelier for Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, which will be specially made for Renée Flemming.
Pierre Audi, the artistic leader of the National Opera in Amsterdam, is also a very important director with whom he works regular. He was very happy to participate on the wonderful project of mister Audi of Parsifal, designed by Anish Kapoor and theinternational well received first staged production of the Gurrelieder by Arnold Schönberg. Mister Pierre Audi will also be responsible for the scenic world première of Theatre of the World by Louis Andriessen in Amsterdam.
In 2004, 2007 and 2010 Frans Willem de Haas was invited to the Salzburger Festspiele where he assistant in 2004 Robert Carsen on the Rosenkavelier and in 2010 Pierre Audi for the world creation of Dyonisos by Wolfgang Rihm.
In 2004 he went on tour with the Flemish Opera to Japan, where he participated in a young student program of Sergei Osawa, with the famous production of La Bohème directed by Robert Carsen.
In 2007 he made a well received adaptation of the Antwerp production of Richard III by G.Batistelli, for the Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and he had the opportunity to create his first production in 2013 in Antwerp of the opera Tosca by G.Puccini. He also directed some small projects for the Dutch Chamber chorus.
This season, he has the privilege to work with Robert Carsen on a new production of Fanciulla del West for the Opera di Scala in Milan. Other engagements will be in Londen at Covent Garden, Sint Petersburg in the Mikhailovsky Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and ofcourse the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam.
