About the performer

Heather Headley

Heather Headley

HEATHER HEADLEY is the recent recipient of the American Theatre Wings 2000 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, preceded by the New York critics’ Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Musical, and an Outer Critics Award nomination.

Heather has been enthralled by music and singing since the age of two, captivated by the distinct island rhythms of her native Trinidad.

While attending the prestigious Northwestern University program for theatre and music, Heather auditioned for and won a role in the original production of the Tony Award-winning Ragtime. As the understudy for 'Sara,' she garnished critical acclaim for her performances.

Next came Broadway, originating the role of 'Nala' in Disney's groundbreaking smash musical sensation The Lion King. She again garnered rave reviews for her stirring and soulful vocals which led to appearances on David Letterman, Rosie O'Donnell, and other nationally syndicated television talk shows.

Headley sings the end title song of Disney's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride with Kenny Lattimore. She also Joined Kenny on the song “Love Will Find A Way” for his album For the Soul of a Man, later produced as a music video.

In May 1999, Headley starred with Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Randy Graff in the Encore! production of Do, Re, Me.

Currently, Headley can be seen on Broadway in the title role that she originated at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre; the title role of Aida, Elton John and Tim Rice's new musical under the direction of Robert Falls and Wayne Cilento.

Headley success in Aida led to an invitation by Elton John to sing two songs on his Aida concept album. Her immense talent has also led to an exclusive recording contract with RCA Records.
