JOHN SUTTON’s professional choral career spans four decades of work in the community, church, academic, and professional settings. From major choral and instrumental works, concert and chamber choirs, to music for television and movies, John is recognized for his work with children, youth, adults, and with amateurs and professionals alike. Today, he is one of the most active professional conductors in the nation, conducting over 400 singers and orchestra members weekly, in addition to being a sought-after choral clinician and festival conductor and adjudicator.
Dr. Sutton has led choirs and orchestras on concert tours to South America, Asia, Europe, and across the United States. He prepared performances for England’s summer Britannia Music Festival, and was the featured conductor and choral clinician at the Exultate Deo Choral Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
John holds degrees in music from Northwest University, San José State University, and the University of California at Los Angeles. John’s mentors include Dr. Charlene Archibeque and Donald Neuen, and he has worked and performed with noted conductors and choral luminaries such as Robert Shaw, Eric Ericsen, Paul Salamunovich, Weston Noble, Anton Armstrong, Dale Warland, and many others.
Dr. Sutton is the Director of Choral Activities at Azusa Pacific University and serves on the national board of Choristers Guild. He has been the Artistic Director of the Angeles Chorale since 2010 and he resides in Altadena, California with his wife, Dr. Cecilia Patiño-Sutton.
