Widespread critical acclaim followed bass JULIAN RODESCU’s debut at La Scala in December 1991, where he sang Titurel in Parsifal under the baton of Riccardo Muti. In 1991, Rodescu made his European debut at the Aachen Stadttheater in Germany, singing Schigolch in Alban Berg’s Lulu, and Sarastro. In 1992, Rodescu. was Oroveso in Bellini’s Norma in the enthusiastically received production by the Dayton Opera. Rodescu has performed Sarastro in The Magic Flute with New York City Opera, Knoxville Opera, Syracuse Opera, and Central City Opera. He made his Carnegie Hall debut with Mstislav Rostropovich in the world premiere performances of Shostakovich’s Rayok. These performances were repeated at Washington’s Kennedy Center and were recorded for Erato. He was subsequently invited by Seiji Ozawa to take part in performances of Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame in Boston’s Symphony Hall, at Tanglewood, and in Carnegie Hall. He has also received rave reviews for his performances in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis (London) and in Verdi’s Aida (Opera Delaware). More recently, he received excellent reviews as Truffaldino in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos conducted by Zubin Mehta. Mehta invited Rodescu to perform the same role with him in Israel last year. He makes his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at this week’s concerts.
