About the performer

Maria Rita

Maria Rita

MARIA RITA is one of the most successful and respected singers to emerge on the Brazilian music scene in the last decade. Her four studio albums (Maria Rita -2003, Segundo -2005, Samba Meu -2007 and Elo -2011) have sold more than 1.25 million copies in Brazil alone and she has won 6 Latin Grammys including Revelation of the Year. She has also the winner of the prestigious Brazilian Multishow and Musica Brasileira awards.

Maria Rita was born on the 9th September 1977 and is the daughter of the late singer Elis Regina and renowned pianist and arranger César Camargo Mariano.

She studied Social Communications at The University of new York before becoming a professional singer at the age of 24.

Her mother Elis is undoubtedly regarded as the greatest Brazilian singer of all time with innumerous successful albums over her 20 year career. She also gained international respect with her performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Elis died prematurely in 1982 when Maria Rita was only 5 years old. Until 2012, Maria Rita had never recorded songs that were made famous by her mother.

After an amazingly successful 10 year career Maria Rita recorded her first CD/DVD for Universal Music, Redescobrir (Rediscover). She sings 28 songs from Elis’s repertoire in an emotional and energizing show recorded live in Sao Paulo this year. With her fantastic four piece band, the album captures the real Brazilian spirit of a true diva singing an incredible selection of classic songs from composers like Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Jorge Ben, Chico Buarque, Ivan Lins, Luiz Gonzaga, Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes and João Bosco.

Like her mother, Maria Rita has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she was introduced by Quincy Jones and has also played at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Irving Plaza (NY) and San Francisco Jazz Festival, amongst more than 50 international performances. Her albums have been released in more than 30 countries, including the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Latin America, Italy and Portugal.

Maria Rita’s Redescobrir, released in November 2012 is quite simply the “must have” Brazilian album of the decade. Available in CD/DVD and Blu-ray.
