About the performer

Mariusz Kwiecien

MARIUSZ KWIECIEN is recognized worldwide as one of the leading baritones before the public today. Known for his handsome voice, incisive musicianship and captivating stage presence, he performs with the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Bavarian State Opera, and with many other renowned theaters around the world. He is in demand for his portrayals of the title role in Don Giovanni, King Roger, and Eugene Onegin, as well as for Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Riccardo in I puritani, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore and Marcello in La bohème.

Mr. Kwiecien sang Enrico in a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor to open the Metropolitan Opera’s season, which he later reprised for a live high definition broadcast to theaters in 46 countries around the world and for a DVD recording on Deutsche Grammophon. His performance of Eugene Onegin for the Bolshoi Opera was recorded live on DVD and released by BelAir Classiques. He has also recorded Brahms’ German Requiem with the Rotterdam Philharmonic on DVD for BIS and with the Atlanta Symphony for Telarc. He joined tenor Juan Diego Florez to record a duet from L’elisir d’amore for Decca.

The title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni has been essential in Mariusz Kwiecien’s young career. The international press has exalted his performances of the Don at San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera and Warsaw Opera, and for many other opera houses in Europe, Japan and the United States. He is also closely associated with the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin which took him to Moscow for his debut at the Bolshoi in a production which he subsequently performed with the Bolshoi Company at the Paris

Opera, Covent Garden and Teatro Real Madrid. He created a sensation at the Paris Opera in his first performances of Szymanowski’s King Roger.

In the current season, Mr. Kwiecien returns to the Metropolitan Opera for his celebrated portrayal of Malatesta in Don Pasquale under the baton of James Levine and sings Marcello in La bohéme with the company on tour to Japan. He sings the title role in King Roger at Teatro Real Madrid, Eugene Onegin in Krakow and will be heard in solo concerts in Prague and Łódź, Poland.

Mariusz Kwiecien is a native of Krakow, Poland. He was a member of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. www.mariuszkwiecien.com
