MAX LESSER, sixteen, will be a junior this coming fall at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where he plays Saxophone in the Jazz Band and a combo. He has been lucky to have the chance to study jazz improvisation and composition with many of his musical heroes, such as Aaron Parks, Adam Schroeder, Dayna Stephens, and Walter Smith III. Max recently took up classical composition after discovering and falling in love with 20th century composers such as Anton Webern, Morton Feldman, and Georg Haas. Among his musical accomplishments, he has received the LA Jazz Society Shelly Manne New Talent Award, Honorable Mention in the 2013 Young Arts Competition, 1st place at the Music Center Spotlight awards, and acceptance into the 2013 Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. In addition to improvising and composing, Max also enjoys reading books and listening to many different types of music, ranging from Mark Turner, Indonesian Gamelan, and Scelsi to Biggie Smalls.
