Writer-director Giuseppe Tornatore’s much-acclaimed 1988 Cinema Paradiso – Academy and Golden Globe awards for Best Foreign Film, Grand Jury Prize at Cannes – is a reflective, semi-autobiographical story of a boy working in a small-town movie theater in Italy after World War II. Morricone’s music touches on the dreams and humor of the film with his usual deft and evocative scoring. This cue (which was recorded by John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra with violinist Gil Shaham) pays tribute to the sound and sentiment of classic ’40s and ’50s films, with a violin solo that projects the wonder and spirit of Cinema Paradiso’s young protagonist.
