Nathan Berg

Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, NATHAN BERG's vocal studies took him to America, Paris, and finally to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he began to study with Vera Rozsa. Winner of the Gold Medal for Singers at the Guildhall, he has also won prizes in the Royal Over-Seas League, Peter Pears, Kathleen Ferrier, and Walther Gruner Lieder competitions.

Berg's 2002/2003 operatic engagements include the title role in Le nozze de Figaro with the New York City Opera, Guglielmo in John Cox's new production of Così fan tutte with Monte Carlo Opera, Argante / Rinaldo with the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Masetto in Don Giovanni at the Bastille, Manoa in Samson with the Netherlands Opera, and Schaunard in La bohème with Vancouver Opera.

Orchestral engagements this season include singing Schubert's Mass No. 5 with the Residentie Orkest and Christopher Hogwood, Handel's Theodora with the English Concert and Trevor Pinnock, and Haydn's Creation under Daniel Harding in Turin. Berg will perform Handel's Messiah for his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan, and with the New York Philharmonic under Sir Neville Marriner. Berg will sing Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 under Roger Norrington with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood and with the National Symphony under Leonard Slatkin, as well as this performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Berg will also perform L'enfance du Christ with Eschenbach and Janácek's Glagolitic Mass with Boulez, both with l'Orchestre de Paris.

Nathan Berg's discography includes Handel's Messiah (Harmonia Mundi), Dvorák's Stabat mater with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony, songs by Othmar Schoeck with the English Chamber Orchestra (Novalis) and with Julius Drake (Jecklin), and a recording of Mendelssohn songs and duets with Sophie Daneman and Eugene Asti (Hyperion).
