About the composer
Paul Gibson
Composer PAUL GIBSON (b. 1952, Sacramento) has been passionate about choral music since he was four years old and heard Benedictine monks in a small French monastery. He received his B.M. summa cum laude from Mount St. Mary's College (Los Angeles) and his M.A. in music composition from California State University, Northridge.
The majority of Gibson's output has been choral music, both sacred and secular, and his works have been conducted by Paul Salamunovich, Philip Brunelle, Grant Gershon, Anne Tomlinson and many others. His music is available from ECS Publishing, Fatrock Ink, G.I.A. Publications, Inc., OCP Publications, Morning Star Music Publishers and Trinitas. Most recently he was added to the Paul Salamunovich Choral Series from Alliance Music Publications, Inc.
In 1987, Gibson was commissioned to arrange the hymns that concluded the two main liturgies of Pope John Paul II's visit to Los Angeles. In 1993, G.I.A. released A Mass of Life, a critically acclaimed CD collection of his sacred music, described by author and syndicated classical radio host Jim Svejda as "…one of those rare contemporary works which manages to be simultaneously provocative, challenging and instantly approachable…a consistently rewarding, deeply moving work."
Gibson's It Fell Upon the High Midnight was co-winner of the 2005 Christmas Carol Competition sponsored by American Composers Forum and VocalEssence. He received the Owen Award from Oregon Catholic Press for "outstanding achievement in the field of liturgical music" and CREATOR magazine named his Veni Sancte Spiritus one of the ten best sacred works of 2001. The Los Angeles Times described Gibson's Salve Regina as "music of vaulting exaltation," and his work has been broadcast on hundreds of radio stations across North America as well as on numerous stations in the Los Angeles area.
The first piece by Paul Gibson to be performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall was There Comes a Ship, during Christmas concerts by the Los Angeles Master Chorale in 2004.
