PETRA HADEN was born into a musical family, one of the triplet daughters of legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden. Her first recordings of note were on Geffen Records with the Los Angeles-based band That Dog, which included her sister Rachel Haden and Anna Waronker. The first two releases were lo-fi affairs filled with loud guitars and complex vocal harmonies. In 1997 they put out Retreat From the Sun, a Brad Wood-produced recording with a catchier, poppier sound. In 1996 Petra recorded her first solo album, Imaginaryland, which was made up of Petra’s a cappella voice collages, and featured both original songs and covers. She has since performed with the Decemberists and in 2006 she traveled with The Foo Fighters on an acoustic tour, playing violin and singing.
Petra’s recent solo recording, released in 2005 on Hoboken’s Bar None Records, is Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out. She still performs with Petra Haden & The Sellouts (her ten woman a cappella choir), singing with and conducting that band. In 2005 she also recorded duets with jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, plainly titled Petra Haden and Bill Frisell. She has now completed her soon–to-be-released solo album Petra Goes to the Movies and is currently collaborating with Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda on a new CD to be released in the near future. Petra can be heard singing the many voicings on the latest Prius commercials, the latest chapter in the always provocative, often unpredictable, yet never less-than-fascinating musical career of Ms. Haden.
