R. B. SCHLATHER is an opera director based in Manhattan, New York. Recent productions there include WERTHER at Opera Company of Brooklyn, TREEMONISHA for New York City Opera Education, SOME CALL REFUGE at Vaudeville Park, THE ARIANNA PROJECT for Musica Nuova, a concert with Nico Muhly and Gotham Chamber Opera at (le) Poisson Rouge, and I. WERE., a pastiche created with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo for the Gotham Early Music Society.
Schlather has been associated with Young Artist training programs since 2006, most recently directing the ensemble performance of CLEMENZA DI TITO at the Canadian Opera Company. For Central City Opera he directed the ensemble artist performance of LA BOHEME, and an opera scenes program with their studio artists. He was a staff director at Glimmerglass Opera for the 2006 – 2009 seasons, staging the Young American Artist opera scenes program, recitals, and cover performances.
As an assistant director, Schlather has worked with Kevin Newbury at Central City Opera, and at Bard Summerscape on DIE LIEBE DER DANAE. He now regularly collaborates with Christopher Alden, most recently on DIE FLEDERMAUS at English National Opera, LIZZIE BORDEN at Boston Lyric Opera. He previously assisted Alden on LA PERICHOLE, COSI FAN TUTTE, and A QUIET PLACE at New York City Opera, DON GIOVANNI and TURANDOT at Portland Opera, SOGNO DI SCIPIONE at Gotham Chamber Opera, CLEMENZA DI TITO at Chicago Opera Theater and Canadian Opera Company, and L’ORFEO at Glimmerglass Opera.
