About the conductor

Robert Sadin

ROBERT SADIN has distinguished himself as conductor, arranger, and record producer. He produced and arranged Gershwin's World for Herbie Hancock. This widely acclaimed album won three Grammy awards, was named Album of the Year in the Down Beat readers' and critics' polls, and was named jazz album of the year in Japan and Germany. He also produced and conducted Wayne Shorter's Alegria; in June Sadin conducted a special concert at Carnegie Hall celebrating the career of Wayne Shorter as part of the JVC Jazz Festival.

As a conductor, Sadin has led the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Chicago, Detroit, and New Jersey Symphonies, and the National Orchestra of Porto, Portugal, among others. He conducted the Orchestra of St. Luke's on the Grammy-winning album Listen to the Storyteller and, with pianist Marcus Roberts, on the Grammy-nominated album Portraits in Blue, featuring Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and James P. Johnson's Yamerkraw. In 1993, Sadin was invited by Wynton Marsalis and Peter Martins to conduct the premiere of the ballet Jazz at the New York City Ballet, where he has since frequently guest-conducted. Sadin has conducted the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, both at Lincoln Center and on tour through the U.S.; he has also recorded Duke Ellington's tone poem The Tattooed Bride with them. Sadin has also served as artistic director of the Jazz in August Festival in Lisbon, where he conducted the first performance of Gil Evans' Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain arrangements.

Sadin's orchestrations and arrangements have been performed by the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Symphony among others. He also recently arranged music of Bach, Mascagni, and Gounod for Plácido Domingo. These arrangements were featured on the DG release, Plácido Domingo: The Sacred Music Album.

Sadin's activities as a record producer include So Many Stars, featuring Kathleen Battle with guest artists Grover Washington, Cyrus Chestnut, and Christian McBride; Glory to God featuring Busta Rhymes; and the Boys Choir of Harlem on the Grammy-winning album Handel's Messiah, a Soulful Celebration.

Sadin was a member of the Princeton University Music Department for six years; he was previously Music Director and Conductor of the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory Orchestra. He has served as musical consultant to the New York Philharmonic, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Philips Classics, and Deutsche Grammophon.
