About the performer
Seal
SEAL, born Sealhenry Olumide Samuel in London of Nigerian and Brazilian ancestry, emerged from England's house music scene in the early 1990s and quickly became the most popular British soul vocalist of the decade. His distinctive blend of soul, folk, pop, dance, and rock have earned him success on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the 1980s Seal began singing in London clubs and toured Japan with the English funk band Push. In 1991 he recorded his eponymous debut with producer Trevor Horn (who also produced Seal's 1994 album). The first single, "Crazy," reached number 15 on the U.K. pop charts and number seven in the U.S. Seal was also a success, reaching number 24 in the U.S. and selling more than three million copies worldwide.
In the summer of 1994 Seal's second album, also titled Seal, sold a million copies by the spring of 1995. The breakout single "Kiss From a Rose," featured on the Batman Forever soundtrack, spent 12 weeks at the top of the adult contemporary charts, and its success took its parent album into multi-platinum status. Human Being followed in 1998.
After five years away, Seal returned with his new album, Seal IV (Warner, 2003). The collection of 11 new songs - culled from 75 - represents a radical return to Seal's roots. Produced in London in collaboration with songwriters Alan Griffiths and Mark Batson and his longtime production partner, Trevor Horn, Seal IV has received widespread critical acclaim and is considered to be Seal's most sophisticated work to date.
