About the performer

Till Fellner

Till Fellner

TILL FELLNER was born 1972 in Vienna and started playing the piano at the age of six. In 1981 he began studying at the Vienna Conservatory with Helene Sedo-Stadler. Since then he has worked with Meira Farkas, Alfred Brendel, and Oleg Maisenberg.

The artist gained international recognition by winning first prize at the prestigious Clara Haskil International Competition in 1993 (the first Austrian to win this competition). In 1998 he was also awarded the Mozart Interpretation Prize of the Vienna Mozart Society.

Fellner has already performed with numerous famous orchestras, including the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London.

He has worked with conductors as Claudio Abbado, Andrew Davis, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christopher Hogwood, Leonard Slatkin, Marek Janowski, Sir Neville Marriner, and Kent Nagano.

Fellner also performs chamber music frequently with groups and artists including the Alban Berg Quartet, violinist Thomas Zehetmair, and cellist Heinrich Schiff.

His reputation for clean, tasteful interpretations, brilliant technique, and unfailing precision, has led to invitations to appear at many of the most important music festivals, such as the Schubertiade Feldkirch, the Wiener Festwochen, the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, the Tanglewood Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, the Festival de La Roque d’Antheron, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Salzburg Festival.

During the 1997/98 season Till Fellner toured the European capitals presenting a critically acclaimed solo cycle consisting of three concerts, in which he performed works by Franz Schubert and composers of the Second Viennese School, Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, and Anton Webern.

In addition to playing orchestra concerts and solo recitals all over the world, Fellner toured Japan with the Alban Berg Quartet, the USA with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, and Australia, performing with the Symphony Orchestras of Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney, and Tasmania during the 1998/99 season.

During the current season, Fellner will tour with a three-concert cycle, in which he will play Book One of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier and Beethoven’s last five piano sonatas, presenting the cycle in Brussels, Lyon, Rome, and Paris, and at London’s Wigmore Hall and Vienna’s Musikverein.

Since 1994, Till Fellner has recorded for Erato Disques (Warner Classics).
