THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2013, AT 8 PM
The Concert is Generously Sponsored by Viking Cruises, the Official Cruise Line of the Hollywood Bowl
WHAT: Former Dudamel Conducting Fellow David Afkham makes his Hollywood Bowl debut leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a program of music by Beethoven and Brahms, Tuesday, August 29, at 8 pm. Acclaimed British pianist and Beethoven specialist Paul Lewis performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, in a program that features other audience favorites – Brahms’ Tragic Overture and Symphony No. 2.
David Afkham is rapidly establishing a reputation as one of the most sought after conductors to emerge from Germany in recent years. The past two years saw highly successful debut engagements with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, DSO-Berlin, Munich Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker, Spanish National Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony, Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony and Seattle Symphony. Afkham also stepped in at short notice for an indisposed Ingo Metzmacher to lead the Gustav Mahler Jungendorchester’s extensive 2012 Easter tour, attracting unanimous critical acclaim in major cities around Europe. In May 2013, Afkham was appointed as the next Principal Conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra, a tenure which will begin in the 2014/15 season. Prior to that, Afkham was a Dudamel Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the 2010/11 season, and Assistant Conductor of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester for three years, a tenure which ended in Summer 2012.
Paul Lewis is internationally regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation with a busy international schedule of engagements at the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals. His numerous awards have included the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year, the South Bank Show Classical Music Award, the Diapason d’or de l’année, two successive Edison awards, the 25th Premio Internazionale Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, the "Preis Der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik", a Limelight Award in Australia, and three Gramophone awards, including Record of the Year in 2008. In 2009, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Southampton. Lewis's complete cycles of core works by Beethoven and Schubert have earned him unanimous critical acclaim from all over the world. Lewis works regularly with many of the world's great orchestras in collaboration with highly acclaimed conductors. His multi award winning discography for Harmonia Mundi includes the complete Beethoven piano sonatas, concertos, and the Diabelli Variations, Liszt’s Sonata in B minor and other works, all the major piano works from the last six years of Schubert's life, and the three Schubert song cycles with tenor Mark Padmore.
