WHAT:

Bramwell Tovey wraps up the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s summer classical season at the Hollywood Bowl with a concert that features the return of world-renowned Itzhak Perlman, playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Thursday, September 13, at 8 pm. The program also includes three of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8.

A musician of striking versatility, Grammy award-winning conductor Bramwell Tovey is acknowledged around the world for his artistic depth and his warm, charismatic personality on the podium. Tovey’s career as a conductor is uniquely enhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lending him a remarkable musical perspective. His tenures as music director with the Vancouver Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras have been characterized by his expertise in operatic, choral, British and contemporary repertoire. Tovey, who is entering his 13th season as Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony, also continues his association with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and as founding host and conductor of the New York Philharmonic’s Summertime Classics series at Avery Fisher Hall.

Throughout his career, Itzhak Perlman has been a recipient of the nation’s highest accolades and honors, including four Emmy Awards, 15 Grammys, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Medal of Liberty and the National Medal of Arts. Perlman has been a frequent guest performer with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since his first appearance with the orchestra in 1966. He is a dedicated musician, teacher, and humanitarian. The Perlman Music Program was established by Perlman and his wife in 1995 to provide young musicians the unique opportunity to foster their talents in a supportive musical community. He currently teaches at the Juilliard School, where he holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair. Perlman, who contracted polio at a young age, has performed in benefit concerts for the Rotary Foundation’s campaign to End Polio Now. In all his remarkable achievements, Perlman speaks on behalf of the disabled and his devotion to their cause is an integral part of his life.
