LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC'S VIJAY GUPTA TO RECEIVE LEONARD BERNSTEIN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR THE ELEVATION OF MUSIC IN SOCIETY FROM LONGY SCHOOL OF MUSIC OF BARD COLLEGE
On March 13, 2017, Vijay Gupta, violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will be presented with the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society by Longy School of Music of Bard College. The award, endorsed by the Bernstein family, was established by Longy in 2000 and past recipients include LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel. The Bernstein laureate, whether as a performer or teacher, exemplifies how music can lift spirits, raise the level of culture in society, and transform lives.
A renowned campaigner for the regenerative presence of artistic voices in social issues, Gupta joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2007 at the age of 19 after completing his Bachelor of Science in Biology and his Master of Music from the Yale School of Music. A passionate advocate for the dedicated presence of citizen artists in social and civic discourse, he founded and directs Street Symphony, a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging through music, marginalized communities of people experiencing poverty, homelessness and incarceration.
