Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 8:00 PM

WHAT:  Ludovic Morlot, music director of the Seattle Symphony, returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday, January 24, at 8:00PM, Friday, January 25, at 11:00AM and Saturday, January 26, at 8:00 PM to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. The program also features pianist Emanuel Ax performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25, K. 503.

French conductor Ludovic Morlot trained as a violinist, and studied conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London and then at the Royal College of Music as a recipient of the Norman del Mar Conducting Fellowship. He was named Music Director of the Seattle Symphony in 2011 energizing the orchestra with his charisma and innovative programming. 2012-13 marks Morlot’s first full season as Chief Conductor of La Monnaie in Brussels, one of Europe’s most prominent opera houses. Highlights of the 2012-13 season include his debut at the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan and return engagements with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. Morlot also appears regularly with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony, and has recently conducted the Cleveland Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

Born in Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax first captured public attention in 1974 when he won the inaugural Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. Currently, as Artist in Residence with the New York Philharmonic for the 2012/13 season, he will appear in multiple weeks at Lincoln Center with repertoire ranging from Bach to Christopher Rouse in addition to a spring tour with the orchestra to Europe. He will return to the orchestras in Los Angeles, St. Louis, Atlanta, Detroit, Washington, and Pittsburgh where he is a beloved regular. Ax has received Grammy awards for the second and third volumes of his cycle of Haydn's piano sonatas. He has also made a series of Grammy-winning recordings with cellist Yo-Yo Ma of the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano. Ax also contributed to an International Emmy award-winning BBC documentary commemorating the Holocaust that aired on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
