WHAT: Alt rock legends Pixies will make their debut at The Hollywood Bowl, with Gogol Bordello, also making their debut, and Cat Power, on Sun. Sept. 28. This concert is part of the KCRW World Festival.
The Boston-formed Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement. Their five studio releases and initial six years together effectively blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom. The Pixies disbanded in 1993 and launched their reunion tour in April, 2004. The Pixies continued their reunion tour in 2005, and then to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their 1989 album Doolittle, launched the "Doolittle Tour" on October 1, 2009 in Dublin, performing the entire album beginning to end.
In June, 2013, it was announced that founding member Kim Deal had decided to leave the Pixies. While very disappointed, Black Francis, David Lovering and Joey Santiago decided to keep the band going.
On June 28, 2013, with no advance announcement, Pixies surprised everyone when they posted on their website a free download of “Bagboy,” the band’s first new song in nearly a decade, and an accompanying music video. On September 3, 2013 and January 3, 2014 respectively, Pixies released EP-1 and EP-2, the band’s first collection of new music in more than two decades.
For their 2013-2014 global tour, Pixies are doing something they’ve never done in the band’s history – touring with a variety of bass players. The Muff’s Kim Shattuck was Pixies’ touring bassist for the September – November 2013 U.S./U.K./European dates, and Paz Lenchantin is playing on the band’s 2014 North and South American tours, and summer Euro festival dates.
Like everything they’ve ever done, Gogol Bordello’s latest album, Pura Vida Conspiracy, is an uncategorizable blend of international influences, anchored by the gypsy rhythms Eugene Hutz grew up with in Ukraine. The message of this record is the quest for self-knowledge beyond borders and nationalities. Hutz chose Pura Vida Conspiracy as the title because it represents everything the band has been moving toward since they first formed over a decade ago. “We’re not a whimsical band with a whimsical message and some languages offer things that others don't. As I made my way through Spanish, the phrase ‘pura vida’ - pure life - struck me. In Spanish, ‘pura vida’ has the gusto that true life should have, as opposed to words in English, French or Russian. It sums up my need of joining fragmented parts and pieces to create a worldwide consciousness. It’s what we’ve had in mind since the first song on the first Gogol Bordello album.”
Hutz founded Gogol Bordello in New York City in 1999, after leaving Ukraine in the aftermath of Chernobyl. In keeping with his vision of creating an international groove, he recruited musicians of all ages, races and cultures, including bassist Thomas Gobena, from Ethiopia, Russian violinist Sergey Ryabtsev from Moscow, percussionist Pedro Erazo-Segovia from Ecuador and backing singer and dancer Elizabeth Sun from Hong Kong by way of Scotland.
From the mid-1990s on, Chan Marshall has proven herself a singer and songwriter who can really get under your skin. Working under the name Cat Power, she's earned a devoted, steadily growing fan base that's followed her from humble avant-folk beginnings. As much about atmosphere as they are melody, her records have also become successively richer in sound, soul and scope. (Rolling Stone) Her latest album, SUN was released in 2012, six years after her last album of original material, and written, played, recorded and produced in its entirety by Marshall, resulting in her most personal album to date. For all its layered expansiveness, it is as handcrafted as her debut, and never has a Cat Power album so paralleled her personality and state of mind – channeling her humor, anger, deep empathy, musical inspirations, technical skill, and spiritual inquiry into an album that’s both surprising and comforting.
