LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF PATRICIA MITCHELL AS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Deborah Borda, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association’s incoming Executive Vice President and Managing Director, has announced the creation of a new senior management position, Chief Operating Officer, and the appointment of Patricia Mitchell to that post. Ms. Mitchell will join the Association in January 2000.
“I am delighted to be joining the staff of this great institution,” comments Ms. Mitchell. “The Los Angeles Philharmonic has a distinguished history and a bright future, and I look forward with excitement to working with Deborah, Esa-Pekka, and the board to carry the orchestra forward and forge even stronger links to the Los Angeles community.”
Ms. Borda agreed, saying, “I am so pleased that Patricia has agreed to join the Association. We have known each other since we worked at partner institutions in San Francisco and my respect for her skills and insight is unqualified. Her range of experience is ideal for a position such as this, and I am thrilled that we will be able to collaborate on many of the new and ongoing projects as vital as the opening of Disney Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and audience development challenges.”
A seasoned veteran of the performing arts, Patricia Mitchell most recently served as Executive Director of the Los Angeles Opera, where she was responsible for the management of the organization, including the supervision of the Development, Marketing & Public Relations, Finance, and Community Programs Departments for the eight-opera, 55-performance season. During her 11 years with the company, Ms. Mitchell directed the institutional development of the Los Angeles Opera through a period of stabilization and growth, including doubling the annual budget, more than tripling the subscription base, and increasing contributed income by more than 150%.
Ms. Mitchell’s new role with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association adds to her distinguished series of positions. Prior to serving at the Los Angeles Opera, she was Company Administrator and Executive Director of the San Francisco Opera, and did consulting work in management, labor relations, planning, and development for arts organizations in Northern California and Minneapolis. She also spent many years as a partner at Arts Development Associates, Inc., a national consulting firm providing services in areas of research, planning, program development, public relations, and marketing for artists, arts agencies, and cultural institutions.
As Chief Operating Officer with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, Ms. Mitchell’s duties will encompass a broad portfolio, and include working closely with Deborah Borda to strengthen many aspects of the organization, including the Hollywood Bowl, administrative structures and staffing, and other institutional issues.
