WHAT:       Yefim Bronfman, long-time local favorite and a member of the LA Phil extended family, returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall for a recital that includes the world premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s LA Phil-commissioned Sisar, Wednesday, January 30, at 8 pm. The performance is part of the LA Phil’s Colburn Celebrity Recitals series.

Sisar is the capricious shadow piece to Salonen’s orchestral Nyx, which the conductor/composer led the LA Phil in earlier this season. The program also includes two epic pieces – Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5 and Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 8 – as well as Schumann’s florid Arabeske in C, Op. 18, composed for his wife Clara.

Bronfman’s history with the LA Phil dates back to 1977, and includes accompanying the orchestra on two tours – Europe in 2002, and Asia in 2008. He won a Grammy for his recording of the three Bartók Piano Concertos with Salonen and the LA Phil in 1997. He also recorded Salonen’s Piano Concerto, for which he earned a Grammy nomination in 2009.

The Colburn Celebrity Recitals series for the 2012/13 season present virtuoso performances by world-renowned artists. Remaining recitals for the season are: violinist Itzhak Perlman (Feb. 12, 2013); pianist Yuja Wang (March 24, 2013); pianist András Schiff (April 17, 2013); and violinist Hilary Hahn (May 7, 2013).
