Q&A with artists after this performance (No intermission)
About This Performance
The popularity of Sibelius’ heroic Fifth Symphony has a lot to do with its varying textures of mood and color, clarified style, and sonic opulence. The last movement is infused with the soaring “swan” motive, reportedly inspired when the composer witnessed a flock of swans all take flight at once.
One of the tremendously moving and impressive highlights of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s final concerts as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009 was the world premiere of his Violin Concerto, written for and with Leila Josefowicz. “She knows no limits, she knows no fear, and she was constantly encouraging me to go to places I was not sure I would dare to go,” Salonen wrote.
The experience of the Fifth Symphony – full-blown, heroic Sibelius – in the hands of another great Finn.
