About This Performance
Due to the sad and unexpected passing of his mother, Maestro Petrenko has withdrawn from this week’s concerts and returned to St. Petersburg to attend her funeral. Emmanuel Villaume will step in as conductor. Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) will be replaced by his Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel in the program.
Webern’s early idyll for orchestra displays full-blown Straussian Romanticism. Also, the captivating Lise de la Salle performs Beethoven’s vigorously heroic Third Concerto.
Come for: French pianist Lise de la Salle playing Beethoven. Still in her mid-twenties, she is already well ensconced in a major international career. The New York Times has raved about “her prodigious power and control, but also her taste and restraint, revealed in well-calibrated dynamics and intelligent pedaling…her freshness and lucidity…faithfully maintaining narrative threads while deftly illuminating the passions swirling around them.”
And more: Anton Webern as you have probably never heard (or enjoyed) him before.
Lise de la Salle will be signing CDs at the lobby entrance to the LA Phil Store on May 1st and 2nd.
