Part of FRC1 Casual Fridays
About This Performance
In a first for the LA Phil, we celebrate Chinese New Year with an eclectic blend of East and West. Joined by prominent Chinese artists, the orchestra will play music by Chinese composers (Li Huanzhi, Tan Dun) as well as traditional masterpieces by Saint-Saëns, Chopin and Tchaikovsky.
Come for: Tan Dun’s new triple concerto is the fourth installment of his Martial Arts Cycle, a set of concertos based on his famous film scores. It unites the themes and musical characters (violin, cello, and piano) from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; and The Banquet.
Each evening features traditional Chinese New Year festivities, including customary red envelope gifts and dragon & lion dances to conclude the performance.
Friday evening’s concert is followed by a complimentary Yanjing beer tasting. Saturday evening’s reception features Chinese calligraphy artists and a complimentary Moutai baijiu spirit tasting.
Members of the performing group will be signing CDs following their performance near the LA Phil Store on Thursday, February 19th.
