Hailed by Gramophone as “one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists,” German musician Johannes Moser will premiere a concerto for electric cello by acclaimed Mexican composer/guitarist Enrico Chapela, who integrates jazz, rock and Latin-American traditions with modern techniques.
Hear it in conjunction with Adams’ aptly titled and thrilling opener and Prokofiev’s popular Fifth Symphony, which the composer described as "a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit."
Johannes Moser will be signing CDs after perfomances October 20th and 21st. His CDs are available here
Astronomy and the electric cello. Normally not among the things that spring to mind when one thinks of the inspiration for symphonic works, to be sure – but these seemingly unrelated things are exactly what inspired Mexican guitarist and composer Enrico Chapela to write Magnetar. After reading about the existence of magnetars - extremely rare and powerful pulsars that emit the largest magnetic fields in the universe- Chapela removed two strings from his electric guitar, tuned it like a cello and, with the help of a commission from the LA Phil, gave birth to this extraordinary work. He enlisted German-Canadian cello sensation Johannes Moser to play the piece, which replicates the slowly building, flaring and erupting energy of these dying heavenly bodies.
