About This Performance

This performance is part of Brahms Unbound, May 5 - June 5 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Steven Mackey is known for his highly personal style, using layers of rhythm and sonority that transform references to classical and popular music in a way that is "lithe, subtle, and more than a little playful" (Newsday). His Beautiful Passing is a violin concerto for Leila Josefowicz that was inspired by the death of his mother. The overarching metaphor of the work has to do with the violin gaining control of its own destiny, competing with, commanding and ultimately letting go of the orchestra. “A life-affirming work…” The Times (U.K.)
