Part of SU2 Sunday 2
About This Performance
After Beethoven’s urgent and dramatic Coriolan Overture, Gustavo Dudamel leads the L.A. premiere of the LA Phil’s Creative Chair John Adams’ piece for string quartet and orchestra, in which the composer interweaves fragments of Beethoven’s late quartets, bits of the 8th and 9th symphonies, the “Hammerklavier” Sonata and other archetypal Beethoven excerpts. Ludwig lovers will have a field day identifying the plethora of motives that come and go.
By hearing Adams’ personal transformations next to Beethoven’s own music, our understanding of both composers is enhanced.
To crown this fascinating program, the mighty Yefim Bronfman teams with Dudamel for one of the most profound and poetic of all piano concertos, the last one that Beethoven was able to premiere as soloist.
