About This Performance
Vivaldi was often referred to as the “Red Priest” because of his hair color and the fact that he was ordained, but because of his health he was excused from saying Mass (and probably never took on priestly duties). His illness might have been a form of asthma, which also prevented him from playing wind instruments. It certainly did not stop him from becoming a virtuoso violinist, which helps explain why he wrote so many concertos for his instrument.
