About This Performance
This performance is part of the Aspect of Adès Festival, April 1-9 at Walt Disney Concert Hall
Ligeti’s Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel (2000) is a song cycle on whimsical, often nonsensical, poetry by Sándor Weöres, scored for mezzo-soprano and an unusual ensemble of percussion and wind instruments. One of Ligeti's last works, it represents a synthesis of folk and avant-garde elements that is typical of his later compositions.
Fascinated by complex rhythms, he discovered that he could get accurate performances from player pianos, so he painstakingly punched piano rolls of his unique musical conceptions. Adès has arranged some of these works so they can be performed by living musicians.
