About This Performance
We celebrate Lutosławski with his Partita and his magical song-cycle Chantefleurs et Chantefables on Robert Desnos’ enchanting poems for children. Lutosławski liked French Surrealist poetry and had previously set poems by Desnos, who died in the Terezin concentration camp.
The astonishing “sung flowers and fables,” an affecting, direct soprano line floating over perfectly calibrated scoring.
Matched with Lutosławski are works by two of his most ardent champions, Esa-Pekka Salonen’s fantastical string quartet and Steven Stucky’s sextet inspired by a Paul Klee painting.
