Part of SU2 Sunday 2
About This Performance
This power-packed program opens with Brahms’ massive, technically demanding, and symphonically conceived Second Piano Concerto, composed more than 20 years after his first. A Grimaud specialty, it also gives us the opportunity to bask in the glory of the slow movement’s rhapsodic cello solo, to be played by our own Principal Cellist Robert deMaine.
Following intermission, we give the first performances of James Matheson’s latest orchestral piece. The LA Phil has enjoyed a close relationship with this leading American composer beyond commissioning and performing his works: for six years, the New York-based musician served as Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's innovative Composer Fellowship Program.
The second Suite from Ravel’s sensual ballet, his most overtly erotic music, closes this rich, generous program.
