Maazel Conducts Strauss

About This Performance

When Richard Strauss composed his controversial opera Salome, he based it not on the Biblical account but on the more lurid version contained in Oscar Wilde’s play of the same name. The final and most shocking scene, in which Salome declares her love to the severed head of John the Baptist, has become widely performed as a concert aria for dramatic soprano.
