About This Performance

In 1909, Rachmaninoff made his first U.S. tour as a pianist, for which he composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 as a calling card. Due to time constraints, he could not practice while in Russia, so he practiced the new piece on a silent keyboard that he brought with him en route to the States. The work has the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical repertoire. A main focus of the 1996 film Shine, based on the life of pianist David Helfgott, was the performance of this concerto.

Come for:

Two roughly contemporary but highly contrasting Russian works from two of the most charismatic musicians.
