“It’s like a beer mat that needs replacing at the end of an evening,” Bramwell Tovey says of his new trumpet concerto, composed for the Toronto Symphony and its principal trumpet, Andrew McCandless. “That’s the smell of the Paradise Saloon. And the dialog that the trumpet has is like the conversations that people have in a pub.”
