About This Performance
Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto, revised many times over the years, is in one single, long movement, divided into six sections that are connected by transformations of several themes, showing a closer relationship to his symphonic work than his virtuosic First Concerto.
Of composing his Third Symphony, Saint-Saëns said, “I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again.” It was his last attempt at symphonic form. He dedicated it to the memory of his friend Franz Liszt, who died that year, on July 31, 1886. Fans of Babe will recognize the main theme as the source of the film’s soundtrack.
