10th Anniversary Celebration

Overview

Ten years, two Music Directors, one orchestra and one iconic venue – that’s what the LA Phil is celebrating in 2013/14, the 10th anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Each of the two Music Directors who have called this Hall home leads the orchestra in two weeks of programs to launch the season, each in his own inimitable way – current Music Director Gustavo Dudamel demonstrates the orchestra’s commitment to new music by pairing newly commissioned works with favorites from the repertoire played by world-class guest artists like Yefim Bronfman and Leif Ove Andsnes; and Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen brings signature programming like Sibelius and Bartók, designed to showcase the acoustics of the Hall that Salonen was so instrumental in opening.

In addition to the insideOUT concert events and lectures that mark the start of the celebration, other luminaries from that inaugural season return to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Walt Disney Concert Hall – cellist Yo-Yo Ma reprises his role in the Opening Gala; all three Creative Chairs for Jazz join together on the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage for a one-night-only jazz event; and the music of Frank Zappa marks the actual 10th anniversary of the Hall’s opening, as Esa-Pekka Salonen and the LA Phil give the world premiere of the iconoclast’s 200 Motels as part of the groundbreaking Green Umbrella series.

Opening Night Gala Concert

Mon Sep 30 7pm

From inspiration to design, from planning to construction and finally to opening - the 10th Anniversary Opening Night Gala’s program tells the twisty and ultimately triumphant story of Walt Disney Concert Hall in five acts. There’s Gustavo, the LA Phil, world-premiere video art by Netia Jones and, of course, superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who was here at the beginning and here ten years later to help celebrate the opening of the most important concert hall of the 21st century.

The late Peter Lieberson was long associated with the LA Phil – Esa-Pekka Salonen led the orchestra in the premiere of Lieberson’s Grawemeyer-winning Neruda Songs here at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2005. When he passed away in April 2011, Lieberson was working on the LA Phil-commissioned percussion concerto that would become Shing Kham. This new work (as realized by Oliver Knussen) is paired with Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, played by Yefim Bronfman, a frequent LA Phil guest who regularly shares his passion and his deep musicality with Walt Disney Concert Hall audiences.

Beethoven the pianist revolutionized what it meant to be a public performer, creating the template of the artist as a culture’s creative conscience. His Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 4 were composed about ten years apart and reveal much about how he evolved the medium as both composer and performer.

The collaboration of great artists is a touchstone of the successful synergy that makes the LA Phil such a respected force on the cultural music scene. Three Finnish compatriots come together in this program – Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen and his longtime colleagues, composer Magnus Lindberg, and cellist Anssi Karttunen – to premiere a new LA Phil-commissioned work for cello and orchestra. Masterworks by Debussy and Bartók provide a rich context for this exploration of sensuality and sonority in the acclaimed Walt Disney Concert Hall acoustic.

For the actual, to-the-day 10th anniversary of Walt Disney Concert Hall, what better way to celebrate than with the LA Phil, Salonen and… Frank Zappa? The consummate L.A. musical rebel, Zappa combined prodigious technical chops with a gleeful, anarchic musical spirit that perfectly sums up the LA Phil’s commitment to new music and edge-of-the-envelope programming – and it’s not like Zappa was a stranger to orchestral work. His work was examined by Mehta, championed by Boulez and is now picked up by Salonen for a unique, only-in-L.A. anniversary celebration of the most daring building in music.

One of the tremendously moving and impressive highlights of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s final concerts as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009 was the world premiere of his Violin Concerto, written for and with Leila Josefowicz. “She knows no limits, she knows no fear, and she was constantly encouraging me to go to places I was not sure I would dare to go,” Salonen wrote.
