Reporting to the VP of Marketing & Communications, the Senior Director, Communications directs the strategy and implementation of the communications plan to promote, protect and advance the brand of the LA Phil which includes Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, The Ford, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) and the Beckmen YOLA Center in Inglewood. This position collaborates across the organization to strategically tell the stories, internally and externally, that help amplify and support the values and business goals of the LA Phil.

Position Elements:

  • Create a long-term strategic communications plan across the portfolio of brands owned and operated by the LA Phil

  • Draft and execute new and creative ways to tell the LA Phil story and support marketing and communications efforts across the organization

  • Develop and maintain our brand voice and messaging throughout all communications

  • Lead the LA Phil’s Public Relations strategy to secure placement of key stories promoting our business objectives and brand identity

  • Build and nurture relationship with local, regional, national and international press, outlets and stakeholders to advance and expand the LA Phil’s position and profile in the media

  • Oversee the drafting and distribution of press materials including press releases, statements, talking points and FAQs

  • Provide communications guidance for issues management related to event and audience concerns

  • Oversee internal communications for the LA Phil including but not limited to executive communications, newsletters, strategic talking points and key messaging

  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure alignment on strategy and messaging to support the LA Phil’s values, goals and key messages

  • Help direct engaging content (videos, articles, stories, images) that amplifies the broader communications, audience and business goals of the LA Phil

  • Responsible of overseeing speech writing and institutional messaging

  • Develops and manages crisis communication plan

  • Manage and execute varied and integrated communications and services including: digital and print publications, editorial content for all channels and constituents, institutional communications, media and public relations.

  • Collaborate, interact and partner with other senior members of the LA Phil staff in order to further communications goals as well as the LA Phil mission

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in Communications with a proven track record to create and implement complex strategies to promote and further a global brand

  • Excellent knowledge of public relations, creating a brand voice, telling the story of multiple interwoven brands

  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills

  • Strong attention to detail, proofreading and writing abilities

  • Professional leader able to inspire, manage and mentor staff

  • Articulate, poised, and calm under pressure

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, work with a diverse population, be flexible, goal and results oriented, meet deadlines goals and budgets

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong written and verbal skills

  • Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, Power Point, and familiarity with sales or fundraising software

  • Available and willing to work nights and weekends as required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

  • Master’s degree preferred

  • Background and interest in the performing arts desirable

  • Dedication and commitment to engage in and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the staff, vendors, and within interactions with the surrounding community is a must

  • Secondary language fluency is a plus
