Program notes

and Masks and was written as an exploration of the clarinet, focusing on the various colors of the instrument. The title is inspired by the names of my teacher Thomas Kotcheff’s works, including go and or and more and more and this. I think of this type of title to mean an infinite idea, or in this case, a seemingly everlasting pandemic. The piece reflects the growing tension that this virus has brought and the abrupt changes that our daily lives have endured. To mimic this, I frequently used two juxtaposing gestures, in which momentum is gained and then suddenly lost.  The work concludes with a tone of optimism, nodding at the idea of a hopeful future.
